James G. Bellingham is a leader in the development of high performance marine robots and the creation of distributed marine robotic systems. He is the founding Director of the Center of Marine Robotics at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). Jim founded the MIT Sea Grant AUV Lab and co-founded Bluefin Robotics. He joined WHOI from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), where he was first Director of Engineering and then Chief Technologist. Bellingham is the author of dozens of scholarly papers. He has led and participated in research expeditions around the world from the Arctic to the Antarctic.  Jim has a particular interest in marine robotics entrepreneurship, and advises several startups. He has served on numerous advisory committees and boards, including Chairing the Naval Research Advisory Committee and serving on several National Academies studies. His awards include the Lockheed Martin Award for Ocean Science and Engineering, and the MIT Fourteenth Robert Bruce Wallace lecturer. Jim received S.B. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
