Ashraf AlTahini is the R&D Director for Aramco Services Company, the U.S.-based subsidiary of one of the world’s leading energy providers, Saudi Aramco.  He assumed the post in June 2015.  In this role he is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and operations of Aramco’s three research centers in the U.S. located in Boston, Detroit and Houston.  These centers conduct a broad range of research spanning the upstream and downstream sectors. 

The centers are closely aligned with Saudi Aramco research organizations including the Exploration and Petroleum Engineering Center’s Advanced Research Center (EXPEC ARC) and the Research & Development Center (R&DC) located at company headquarters in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The company also has research centers in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia; Delft, The Netherlands; Paris; Daejeon, Korea; and Beijing.

Prior to this role, AlTahini was the assistant to the Vice President of Petroleum Engineering and Development for Saudi Aramco and the Chief Technologist of EXPEC ARC. AlTahini earned his PhD and Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma.  He holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia.

AlTahini is a member of several professional organizations and has received awards and recognition for his work, including: the 2010 Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Young Member Outstanding Service Award; the University of Oklahoma Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering (MPGE) Rock Mechanics and Publication Award 2003 and 2006; and Best Paper and Presentation at the Saudi Aramco Technical Exchange Meeting in 2000. 

AlTahini was the 2009 chairperson for the SPE Saudi Arabia Section Annual Technical Symposium and Exhibition.  He also served as the 2011 chairperson for SPE’s Saudi Arabia Section.  AlTahini is a SPE Century Club member and has authored or co-authored more than 20 technical publications and three U.S. patents.
