Panel Discussion: Communication Standards and Cybersecurity in the Oil and Gas Industry

As our industry progresses through its Digitalization journey, many assumptions and approach from yesterday must be revisited when it comes to smart communications: our need and demand for reliable, performant, secure communications, supporting interconnected intelligent systems from edge to cloud has increased drastically, in a context where focus on increased efficiencies, safety, need for faster & better decisions, and drive for agility turned “Data” into the core of our new digitally-enabled business workflows.

In parallel, headlines around the world remind us on regular basis of the evolution and acceleration around cyber threats, cyber crime, and even cyber terrorism. Over the last 12 months only, to name a few: WannaCry, NotPetya, Meldown, Spectre... shook many industries, companies and even individuals when nations were targeted. Governments are now expressly concerned about cyber-protecting their critical infrastructure and critical resources, and when it comes to individuals, regulations such as GDPR start appearing in an attempt to start protecting citizens data.

The Oil and Gas industry across upstream, midstream and downstream has an important role to play in that context: Cyber Security cannot be an afterthought in our “Engenious” solutions designs, and Cyber Security must be assured across the operational lifecycle of those solutions. This panel session will explore how our industry should balance the need for increased smart communications supporting our ever expanding data-flows while better protecting those data-flows as well as the physical and digital assets operating through those data-flows.

Ahmad Shammari's Abstract

We have already witnessed a new era that is characterized by the digital revolution where digitalization technologies have been evolving rapidly and changing almost every aspect of our lives. The oil and gas industry is no exception.  After almost two decades of commencing the Digital Oil Field business modality in various forms and shapes, it is always wise to occasionally step back and evaluate this journey.  This presentation examines the challenges to a successful deployment of Digital Oil Field technologies in oil and gas assets with greater focus on various communication means. It will shed light on a number of specific dimensions; such as data tag naming standardization, hardware storage, data security and software integration.
